Glucosamine and chondroitin are among the best-known supplements for joint comfort. People often ask whether they work. Here is a balanced, plain-language summary.
Both are natural substances found in healthy cartilage. Supplements usually come from shellfish or animal sources.
Studies have given mixed results. Some people report less knee or hip discomfort, while large studies have often found little or no benefit compared with a placebo for the average person. Because results differ, some health groups do not recommend them for everyone.
The NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that glucosamine may raise blood sugar in some people, and that glucosamine and chondroitin have been linked to a higher risk of bleeding in people who take the blood thinner warfarin. It also says it is still uncertain whether they meaningfully change symptoms or joint structure.
